Exclusive Accolade Features

Vocabulary Tutorial

One of the innovative features that Accolade offers is a vocabulary tutorial based on a thorough analysis of all previously released SAT exams given in the past 10 years. After culling through all the vocabulary on these tests, Accolade has formulated a real-time, interactive vocabulary module that allows students to make the best use of their time by learning words that actually occur on the real test (This is especially useful because there is a significant amount of word recycling on the SAT from year to year). In addition, the program is highly targeted to the individual needs and talents of each student—it keeps track of every word the student knows and every word the student has not yet learned, presents students with new words at a manageable rate, adjusts the level of difficulty to parallel the current vocabulary knowledge of the student, and does not waste time by repeating words once the student has demonstrated clear mastery of them. The Accolade vocabulary tutorial is the most effective means of rapidly and permanently increasing SAT-specific vocabulary that is currently available in the market.

Roots and Prefixes Tutorial

Accolade's new roots and prefixes tutorial covers almost 600 Latin and Greek roots and prefixes to help students learn even more words at a faster rate. Each question from this segment of the site not only provides precise and easy-to-remember definitions, but it also lists up to four real English words that contain the root or prefix in question so that students have an easier time committing these word parts to memory. The roots and prefixes tutorial is especially efficient because once a student masters a root, then that student is able to decipher up to twenty or thirty otherwise unfamiliar words that are built from that root base.

Interactive Essay Tutorial & Grading

Another market-leading feature that is available at Accolade is the interactive essay tutorial. In this section of the site, we offer a concrete, step-by-step approach to writing a high-scoring SAT essay in the 25-minute window that is allowed on the exam. The time pressure to produce a compelling and effective essay in this span is considerable, and so students must have a precise, rehearsed formula for exactly how they will approach this section. We have designed a highly structured essay tutorial that takes students through this process paragraph by paragraph and explains exactly how to craft an appropriate, substantive and organized response to the test prompt. In addition, Accolade provides students with ten practice essay prompts modeled exactly on the NEW SAT format. In order to improve, students must work hard, master the Accolade techniques, and practice their writing as much as possible. Students will be able to write practice responses, submit their essays to Accolade for scoring and feedback based on the grading metrics established by the NEW SAT, and even receive personalized, detailed feedback from a highly-qualified, professional essay grader (All Accolade essay graders are graduates of Harvard University who majored in English Literature and Language and currently hold at least one advanced degree in the field). Students will also be able to review two completely different 800-score model essays for each prompt they practice, and read analysis of those essays, in order to compare their work with the caliber of writing necessary to ace the essay.

Core Content, Tricks, Traps, & Practice Tests

Each Accolade tutorial covers both the core content necessary to ace that section of the SAT in addition to a comprehensive explanation of the tricks and traps that the test-writers use to lure students into choosing incorrect answers. Moreover, all the Accolade practice tests are meticulously crafted to match the types and difficulty of questions that occur on the real SAT. We have analyzed every publically released SAT from the past decade on a question-by-question basis to decipher the patterns of the exam. This close familiarity with the SAT enables us to coach our students to use these patterns to answer questions correctly and avoid mistakes they would otherwise unwittingly make.

Drills

In addition, Accolade has created a test bank of thousands of simulated SAT questions for students to practice during the course. These review questions exactly mirror the patterns of questions on the real SAT. The Accolade drills are an essential component of the Premier Course, and they track student responses and measure student learning in each subject. Accolade's practice drills target areas of specific weakness, and students can elect either to focus on points of weakness until they become strengths or to practice drills at random to cover all the material on the exam at once. Alternating between these two approaches in the drills section usually produces the best results and helps students to maximize long-term retention of the material they have learned.

Archived Streaming Video Lectures

All Accolade students are able to attend class either in person or online, depending on what is most convenient for them. Each of the 12 hours of lecture is archived on the course website and is available for students to view and review as their needs and schedules require. This flexibility is especially valuable to those students who are working hard to balance multiple demands on their time and who prefer to attend class at their own convenience. Many of our most successful students at Accolade have informed us that the archived streaming video lectures were the best part of the entire course because they could watch the class lectures whenever they wanted to and they could focus on particularly challenging concepts or techniques to ensure their full understanding prior to test day.

Parent Accounts

Finally, each student account at Accolade is paired with a parent account that enables parents to monitor both the quantity and quality of their child's progress. Accolade regularly sends out emails to highlight strengths and weaknesses in a student's performance, and this communication in conjunction with the parent accounts enables parents to remain informed about exactly what their child is learning with Accolade in real time. This feature is not available from other test-prep companies, but at Accolade we have found this aspect of the course to be immensely valuable for parents, for students, and for us as well as we all work together to achieve the highest possible SAT scores for each individual student.
